Miranda Arellano, Registered Psychotherapist
EMDR Certified Therapist • EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ • Founder & Clinical Director
My own transformative experience with therapy during my youth changed the direction of my life and sparked a lasting passion for helping others. That experience ultimately led me to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology followed by a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology.
Today, I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), an EMDR Certified Therapist, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™, and the Founder and Clinical Director of Healing Connections Psychotherapy in North Bay, Ontario.
My work has developed around a central interest: understanding what happens when difficult experiences continue to affect the brain, body, relationships, and sense of safety long after the original experience has passed.
I work from a trauma-informed, attachment-aware perspective and have pursued extensive advanced training in trauma, EMDR therapy, dissociation, addictions, early and preverbal trauma, first-responder mental health, couples therapy, chronic pain, medical trauma, and chronic health conditions.
My Approach to Therapy
I don't believe therapy should be one-size-fits-all.
People are complex. The difficulties that bring someone to therapy may involve current circumstances, relationships, earlier experiences, attachment, traumatic memories, physical health, pain, nervous-system responses, grief, identity, or patterns that have developed over many years.
My role is to understand the whole picture rather than simply focusing on a diagnosis or symptom.
Treatment may involve building greater stability and regulation, understanding patterns and triggers, processing unresolved experiences, strengthening relationships, developing new ways of responding, and helping clients reconnect with parts of their lives that have been affected by trauma or distress.
Above all, I strive to create a therapeutic relationship that is collaborative, compassionate, respectful, and grounded in each client's individual needs and goals.
EMDR Therapy & Trauma Treatment
A significant focus of my clinical work and professional development has been Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.
I am an EMDR Certified Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ and have completed advanced EMDR training across a range of complex clinical presentations.
EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing model, which proposes that some distressing experiences may remain insufficiently processed and continue to influence present emotions, beliefs, physical responses, relationships, and behaviour.
My EMDR work extends beyond addressing a single traumatic incident. Depending upon the client and clinical presentation, treatment may involve exploring earlier experiences, attachment-related experiences, medical events, current triggers, body-based responses and fears about the future.

The latter training incorporates attachment and trauma history into EMDR case conceptualization and specifically considers medical incidents, illness experiences, hospitalizations, early caregiving experiences and separations when identifying potential EMDR targets.
Chronic Pain, Medical Trauma & Chronic Health Conditions
Living with chronic pain or an ongoing health condition can affect far more than the body.
Health challenges may change someone's independence, relationships, career, parenting, identity, activities, sense of safety and expectations for the future. Repeated medical appointments, procedures, frightening symptoms, uncertainty and difficult healthcare experiences can themselves become significant sources of distress.
I have pursued advanced EMDR training specifically focused on chronic pain and chronic health conditions, adding to my previous training in EMDR approaches for pain and phantom limb experiences.
I have also completed Expanded! Resetting the Immune System EMDR Training, which explores the intersection of trauma, attachment, emotional regulation, nervous-system responses, illness experiences and EMDR case conceptualization.
Depending on the person, psychotherapy may explore experiences such as:
-
Chronic or persistent pain
-
Medical trauma
-
Frightening diagnoses or medical events
-
Hospitalizations and procedures
-
Fear associated with symptoms or symptom recurrence
-
Distressing memories associated with illness or injury
-
Earlier experiences activated by illness or dependency
-
Changes in identity or functioning
-
Grief associated with changes in health
-
Feeling disconnected from or unable to trust the body
-
Anxiety surrounding appointments, tests or procedures
-
Current medical triggers and fears about the future
My goal is not to suggest that psychological experiences caused a person's physical illness.
Rather, therapy can provide a place to address the emotional, relational and traumatic experiences that may accompany illness and pain, while supporting the person's overall ability to cope and function.
Psychotherapy and EMDR are complementary to appropriate medical care and are not substitutes for medical diagnosis or treatment.
First Responders & Frontline Professionals
Supporting first responders has become another significant area of my professional work.
First responders routinely encounter experiences that most people may experience only once, or never, in their lifetime. Repeated exposure to trauma, responsibility, loss, unpredictable threat, organizational stress and cumulative operational experiences can have significant effects over time.
My work in this area includes therapy, EMDR, early intervention, professional education and the development of specialized first-responder programming.
Creator of the Operational Resiliency Protocol (ORP)
I developed the Operational Resiliency Protocol (ORP) to provide an EMDR-informed approach to supporting the mental health and resiliency of first responders and frontline professionals.
ORP reflects my interest in moving mental-health support further upstream: helping people understand their nervous systems, recognize stress responses, develop practical regulation strategies and address the psychological impact of operational exposure.
I have provided training and programming within first-responder settings and continue to develop professional education in this area.
Couples & Relationship Therapy
Trauma doesn't occur in isolation. It can also affect how we communicate, trust, connect, manage conflict and experience intimacy.
I have completed Levels 1, 2 and 3 training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and integrate Gottman-informed interventions with my broader trauma and attachment background.
I have a particular interest in supporting couples experiencing:
-
Communication breakdown
-
Repeated or escalating conflict
-
Emotional disconnection
-
Affairs and betrayal
-
Addiction and its impact on relationships
-
Trauma within one or both partners
-
Trust injuries
-
Changes in intimacy
-
Major life transitions
-
Stress associated with demanding careers or first-responder work
Rather than determining who is "right," couples therapy can help identify the patterns occurring between partners and create opportunities for greater understanding, accountability, safety and connection.
EMDR Consultation for Clinicians
In addition to clinical work, one of the most rewarding parts of my career has been supporting other therapists.
As an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™, I provide EMDR consultation to clinicians who want to deepen their understanding and confidence in using EMDR therapy.
Consultation may include support with:
-
EMDR case conceptualization
-
Target identification and sequencing
-
Complex trauma
-
Attachment-informed EMDR
-
Early and preverbal trauma
-
Dissociation and parts work
-
Chronic pain and health conditions
-
Medical trauma
-
First responders and operational trauma
-
Recent and ongoing traumatic stress
-
Addictions and DeTUR
-
EMDR intensives
-
Group EMDR protocols
-
Difficult or stalled processing
-
Integrating EMDR into broader clinical practice
My approach to consultation is collaborative and practical. The goal isn't simply to know a protocol, it is to understand why you are doing what you are doing, where the client's symptoms may fit within the AIP model, and how to make thoughtful clinical decisions when therapy doesn't follow a textbook path.
Individual and group EMDR consultation opportunities are available.
Clinical Leadership, Training & Speaking
As Founder and Clinical Director of Healing Connections Psychotherapy, my work extends beyond my own clinical practice.
I provide clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary environment and have a strong interest in therapist development, trauma-informed practice, EMDR consultation, first-responder mental health, chronic pain and health conditions, and translating complex clinical concepts into practical tools people can actually use.
I am available for select:
Professional presentations • First-responder training • Mental-health education • EMDR consultation • Clinical workshops • Conference presentations • Organizational education
My professional education work includes the Operational Resiliency Protocol (ORP) as well as education related to trauma, resiliency, nervous-system responses and EMDR-informed practice.
Who I Have Experience Supporting
My clinical experience includes working with:
Adults • Children • Adolescents • Couples • Families • First Responders • Frontline Professionals • Healthcare Professionals
Presenting concerns may include trauma and PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, panic, depression, grief and loss, attachment trauma, dissociation, addictions, chronic pain, medical trauma, chronic health challenges, relationship distress, infidelity and betrayal, occupational stress, and cumulative traumatic exposure.
Why This Work Matters to Me
My professional interest in trauma is also deeply personal.
My own experience with trauma and therapy shaped the direction of my career and gave me an appreciation for how powerful it can be when someone finally feels understood and discovers that change is possible.
It is one of the reasons I have continued pursuing advanced education throughout my career.
I don't want clients, or the clinicians I consult with, to simply understand what intervention we are using. I want them to understand why a response developed, what may be maintaining it, and what we can do with that information.
Healing does not necessarily mean erasing what happened.
Sometimes it means being able to remember without reliving, experience your body without immediately fearing it, reconnect with other people, trust yourself again, or begin building a life that is no longer organized around what happened before.

Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization for Individuals and Groups (ASSYST-I) & (ASSYST-G)
When There Are No Words
EMDR Intensives
ASSYST-I focuses on nervous system regulation and is used in rapid response settings, providing immediate support within hours to weeks after trauma. ASSYST-G is a group procedure bridging the gap between Psychological First Aid and high-intensity psychotherapy for individuals showing severe distress after a critical incident.
Sandra Paulsen’s work, "When There Are No Words," explores how EMDR therapy can address deep-seated or implicit trauma that is difficult to articulate. Her approach emphasizes the use of non-verbal techniques to help clients process and heal from unspoken emotional wounds. It is useful for repairing neglect and trauma from the attachment period.
An EMDR intensive is a more immersive and therapeutic experience than traditional EMDR
sessions. It typically involves several hours of therapy per day, over a period of several days, with the goal of achieving rapid trauma resolution. This format allows for a deeper and more thorough processing of traumatic memories than is possible in traditional weekly sessions.

Advanced Trauma Treatment for Children and Adolescents
Miranda has completed specialized training on the ethical and therapeutic use of touch in child therapy, focusing on attachment, self-regulation, and trauma-informed care. This training explores how play, movement, and developmentally appropriate therapeutic interactions can help children safely process trauma, regulate their emotions, and strengthen relational connection.
IFS Immersion: Integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) Across Clinical Applications
Miranda has completed advanced training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, a compassionate, evidence-based approach that helps people understand the different “parts” of themselves that hold pain, protection, and resilience. This approach can be especially helpful for healing trauma, anxiety, shame, and relationship patterns while supporting deeper self-understanding and lasting change.
Looking Through the Eyes of Trauma and Dissociation
"Looking Through the Eyes of Trauma and Dissociation" by Sandra Paulsen delves into how early trauma impacts brain development and leads to dissociation. The book provides insights and strategies for using EMDR and ego state therapy to treat complex trauma, particularly in cases where dissociation is present.
